Political analyst Oazu Nantoi considers that the Transnistrian conflict is not an internal one and the population of Transnistria is not part of the dispute, while the Tiraspol administration, especially Igor Smirnov, do not represent this population. Related statements were made in the EU-Moldova Forum held in Chisinau. The analyst stressed that a viable solution to the conflict cannot be identified at the negotiating table with Igor Smirnov.

“The solution resides in the controlled and peaceful removal of this regime and the gradual integration, taking into account the psychology of the population and the consequences of being under this regime for 20 years and of the total lack of democracy. Therefore, the so-called Transnistria does not need a socio-legal status, but a special treatment while it will be integrated into Moldova,” said Oazu Nantoi.

According to the analyst, the Moldovan citizens should prove that they are able to assume responsibility for the country’s reunification. “We, the Moldovan citizens and our authorities should become involved in the reunification process. Only then will our partners from abroad help us. If we get involved, we will convince ourselves that not Russia is strong, as it does not know what to do with this Transnistria, but we have been weak during 20 years because we were unable to reunify the country with dignity,” said Oazu Nantoi.

The expert in the Transnistrian issue voiced hope that the Alliance for European Integration will indeed promote the European integration, which means not only pro-European statements, but also implementation of European practices and an open and sincere dialogue with the Transnistrian population.

In the same forum, former Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Victor Osipov said that plenary involvement is needed in order to achieve results. “A number of partners have been involved in this process and now we should take the opportunities and make use of this readiness to support Moldova,” he stated.

The EU – Moldova Forum took place during March 29-31. It was organized by the Chisinau Foreign Policy Association and the Institute for Eastern Studies of Warsaw. The event brought together important businessmen, politicians and diplomats from Moldova and abroad.
